About

Dr. Treca Bourne believes the systems people move through shape what becomes possible for them. From an online admissions application to a visa process to the infrastructure powering the internet, the design decisions embedded in those systems either open doors or quietly close them.

Her writing explores that idea across forms. She is the author of “Before They Even Apply” and the “Intake Usability Toolkit,” drawn from doctoral research into how community college admissions systems create barriers for the students they are meant to serve. Her debut novel, “Above a Bakery in Belgium: On Leaving and Becoming,” follows a globally mobile protagonist whose life is shaped at every turn by the systems around him.

Dr. Bourne lives in Northern Virginia with her husband and two dogs.

Hello, I’m Dr. Treca Bourne. Welcome to my little corner of the internet, kept intentionally simple so the work can speak for itself. I write about the systems and structures that shape how people move through the world, sometimes through research, sometimes through fiction, always with care.
